Why does my new Tempur-Pedic mattress have a strange odor?

Your mattress may have a slight odor remaining from our unique manufacturing process. This is normal and completely harmless and will dissipate within a few days.

How is TEMPUR different from other materials that claim to be viscoelastic?

Unlike memory foam, TEMPUR material is extremely dense--there are simply more cells per square inch than in most viscoelastic foams. Furthermore, the cells themselves are extremely dense and consistently shaped. The greater density allows for greater sensitivity of the material, and is more durable preventing the “bottoming out” that can occur in less dense material.

What is TEMPUR® pressure relieving material?

It is a viscoelastic, temperature sensitive material, quite different from ordinary foam. Viscoelastic describes the property of a substance to both resist flow or change of shape (viscous) and to return to its original shape after being forced to change (elastic). An imperfect version of TEMPUR material was developed for NASA in the 1970s, designed specifically to conform to any individual’s body and relieve the pressure of the tremendous forces of gravity the astronauts experienced during lift off and flight. Like so many NASA technologies, the formula was eventually released to the public. In 1991, Tempur World introduced TEMPUR pressure relieving material, a vastly improved reinvention of the original NASA formula for home and medical use.

How does the Tempur-Pedic mattress react in Humid Climates?

In reference to humidity or high temperature, your Tempur-Pedic mattress is only sensitive in the fact it will feel softer or less firm. This will not adversely affect the life-span or durability. The pressure-relieving qualities will remain the same.

Is the Tempur-Pedic material sensitive to temperature?

TEMPUR® material is temperature sensitive, so environmental temperatures may affect the feel of your mattress. Very warm and humid weather may make the mattress feel very soft, while very cold weather may render the mattress somewhat firmer. If you feel the mattress is too firm, try removing the conventional mattress pad to increase the responsiveness of TEMPUR® material. If you feel the mattress is too soft, try adding a conventional mattress pad to make the mattress seem firmer. You may also try keeping the room slightly cooler.

Mattress Use & Care Instructions

Delivery Notice: Your mattress may have been delivered folded.  This is to make it easier for the delivery teams to handle and move.  If your mattress is delivered this way, particularly in weather below 50° F, do not force it to lay flat.  It may take a few hours, depending on the temperature of your room, but your mattress will naturally unfold as it warms up.

The following are instructions regarding the use and care of your Tempur-Pedic® mattress:

  • Your Tempur-Pedic mattress is designed for use with a firm, solid-surface, non-spring foundation or adjustable bed base that is structurally capable of supporting the weight of your Tempur-Pedic mattress. If you do not use one of these options, we may require proof of the quality of your foundation if you make a warranty claim. Your warranty is based on tests conducted on “sets” that consist of Tempur-Pedic mattresses and Tempur-Pedic platform foundations/TEMPUR® Advanced Ergo Systems™.  Placing plywood or particleboard over your existing foundation is not recommended and may not provide the support your Tempur-Pedic mattress requires.
  • Remember that your Tempur-Pedic mattress is sensitive to temperature. In rooms of 65° Fahrenheit or less, your mattress will become somewhat firmer.  However, it will readily warm and respond to your body temperature when you lie on it.  Due to the temperature-sensitivity of the material we do not recommend using an electric blanket or heating pad with your mattress. These items can impair the unique ability of your Tempur-Pedic mattress to react to your body temperature and conform exactly to your body shape.
  • We do not recommend using conventional mattress pads or mattress covers as they can affect the full pressure-relieving experience of our proprietary TEMPUR material. However, The MattressProtector by Tempur-Pedic™ has been specifically designed to protect your Tempur-Pedic mattress while not impacting the feel or performance.
  • You never have to flip or rotate your Tempur-Pedic mattress. Your Tempur-Pedic mattress features a one-sided design and should never be flipped.
  • It may take a while to become accustomed to the unique feeling of your Tempur-Pedic mattress. Most people are very comfortable on the first night, but others may need extra time to adjust to the pressure relieving qualities of the TEMPUR® material.
  • Your mattress may have a slight odor remaining from our unique manufacturing process. All polyurethane-based materials have this characteristic.  This is normal and completely harmless and will dissipate within a few days.
  • When transporting or storing your mattress, lay the mattress flat - not on its side or folded.  The handles included on some Tempur-Pedic mattress models are for positioning purposes only - not for carrying.
  • The covers on some Tempur-Pedic mattress models are removable for washing. We recommend a cold temperature setting for machine washing and a cool setting for machine drying. Air-drying is best.  Do not “over-dry” the cover and do not use chlorine products or harsh stain removers of any kind.  Never wash the TEMPUR material. Please refer to the tags sewn into your mattress cover or contact our Customer Service Department if you do not know if your cover is removable.

Pillow/Cushion Use & Care Instructions

Delivery Notice: If your pillow or cushion is delivered in weather below 50° F, do not force it to bend or be folded.  It may take a few hours, depending on the temperature of your room, but the product will naturally soften as it warms up.

The following are instructions regarding the use and care of your Tempur-Pedic® pillow or cushion:

  • Remember that your Tempur-Pedic product is sensitive to temperature. In rooms of 65° Fahrenheit or less, it may become somewhat firmer.  However, it will readily warm and respond to your body temperature.  Due to the temperature-sensitivity of the material we do not recommend adding a heat source on top of the product. These items can impair the unique ability of your Tempur-Pedic product to react to your body temperature.
  • It may take a while to become accustomed to the unique feeling of your Tempur-Pedic product. Most people are very comfortable on the first night, but others may need extra time to adjust to the pressure relieving qualities of the TEMPUR® material.
  • Your pillow or cushion may have a slight odor remaining from our unique manufacturing process.  This is normal, completely harmless and will dissipate within a few days.

Air-drying is best.  Do not “over-dry” the cover and do not use chlorine products or harsh stain removers of any kind.  Never wash the TEMPUR material. Please refer to the tags sewn into the cover or contact our Customer Service Department if you do not know if your cover is removable.  (Please note the cover for The GrandPillow by Tempur-Pedic™ is dry clean only)

Overlay/Topper Use & Care Instructions

Delivery Notice: Your overlay/topper may have been delivered rolled.  If your overlay/topper is delivered this way, particularly in weather below 50° F, do not force it to lay flat.  It may take a few hours, depending on the temperature of your room, but the product will naturally unfold as it warms up.

The following are instructions regarding the use and care of your Tempur-Pedic® overlay or topper:

  • Remember that your Tempur-Pedic product is sensitive to temperature. In rooms of 65° Fahrenheit or less, it may become somewhat firmer.  However, it will readily warm and respond to your body temperature when you lie on it.  Due to the temperature-sensitivity of the material we do not recommend using an electric blanket or heating pad with your overlay/topper. These items can impair the unique ability of your Tempur-Pedic overlay/topper to react to your body temperature and conform exactly to your body shape.
  • It may take a while to become accustomed to the unique feeling of your Tempur-Pedic product. Most people are very comfortable on the first night, but others may need extra time to adjust to the pressure relieving qualities of the TEMPUR® material.

How long will it take for me to get used to the Tempur-Pedic mattress?

Some people are completely comfortable on the mattress right away. Others who have been sleeping on a hard surface, may need some time to adjust to the remarkable amount of support and unique pressure relieving feel of the mattress (some call it a “floating” or “light” feeling).

Will the Tempur-Pedic mattress make me hot?

No. The cells themselves are open and breathable, so the material is self-ventilating. Unlike innerspring mattresses which cause pressure points, the TEMPUR® material relieves pressure resulting in better circulation. Due to the increase in circulation throughout your body, you may discover you need fewer blankets to sleep comfortably.

Is it more difficult to change position?

No, the slow recovery of the mattress to its original shape after conforming to your exact body contours is a different feeling. This is necessary for the mattress to conform to your body to relieve pressure and reduce the need to change position (toss and turn).

My Tempur-Pedic mattress feels softer than when I first bought it. Is it breaking down?

The mattress naturally undergoes an adjustment or “softening” period. Some cells may have remained closed after the manufacturing process. The mattress cells are fully opening and becoming more responsive to temperature and weight with continued use. This is normal and desirable. The softening process may occur more rapidly in the areas where you most frequently sleep as those cells are being manipulated more regularly.

Why does my mattress feel very firm and cold sometimes, and soft and responsive others?

TEMPUR material is temperature sensitive, so environmental temperatures can affect the feel of the mattress; but it will still adjust to your body temperature. The unique properties of our material are designed to work to each individual size, shape, and weight.

Is there an adjustment period with the Tempur-Pedic mattress?

Like any new bed, it may take a while to become accustomed to the unique feeling of your new Tempur-Pedic® Swedish Mattress™. Most people are very comfortable on the first night. Others, however, may need a few nights to adjust to the unique feeling of TEMPUR® material.

My mattress is sagging/has a body indention, what do I do?

A poor foundation may cause the appearance of an indentation. A box spring will likely cause your Tempur-Pedic® mattress to sag. If your mattress is supported by a Tempur-Pedic® Platform Foundation and is still sagging, your Platform Foundation may be damaged. To determine if the defect is in the mattress or in the support, you can place your mattress on the floor. Your mattress should return to proper flatness and support when placed on the floor if the Platform Foundation is at fault.

Can I use my existing 4 poster/sleigh bed/etc with my TEMPUR® Advanced Ergo System™?

The adjustable base is designed to fit into most modern beds. However, we have had some difficulty fitting them into antique beds. We always recommend the customer measure the inside dimensions of the bed before purchasing an adjustable base.

How do I program my remote control?

Please refer to the user manual that came with your TEMPUR® Advanced Ergo System™ or you can download it here. For phone assistance please contact a Leggett and Platt representative at 800-888-3078.

I am having a problem with my TEMPUR Advanced Ergo System - who do I contact?

If you experience any trouble with your TEMPUR Advanced Ergo System during the warranty period, please consult the troubleshooting section of your Reference Guide. If problems persist after following these instructions, please call: 1-800-979-1457.

Are all Tempur-Pedic Mattresses compatible with the TEMPUR Advanced Ergo System?

No, the TEMPUR Advanced Ergo System is not recommended for The GrandBed by Tempur-Pedic or The BellaSonna Bed by Tempur-Pedic.
