General Use & Care Comfort TEMPUR® Advanced Ergo System™
Can I use an electric blanket with my Tempur-Pedic Mattress?
We do not recommend using electric blankets or heated pads with the Tempur-Pedic® mattress. The exposure to direct heat over extended periods of time may cause damage to the TEMPUR® material. We suggest that if your mattress is too cold, try turning up the bedroom thermostat for 20 to 30 minutes prior to bedtime. Once you are in bed, the mattress will warm up quickly in response to your body heat. If you do choose to use an electric blanket to warm your mattress before bedtime, we recommend that you turn it off after 30 minutes to avoid overexposing the TEMPUR® material to heat and always using a medium heat setting.
Can I put the Tempur-Pedic mattress on my existing set of box springs?
This mattress is designed for use with a firm, wood, completely flat, non-spring foundation. Failure to use such a foundation with the mattress will void the Tempur-Pedic Swedish Mattress™ warranty and all other warranties, whether express or implied, including, without limitation, the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. Unless you currently have a firm, wood, completely flat, non-spring foundation, you should not use your existing foundation with the mattress.
Will the Tempur-Pedic Mattress fit in my waterbed frame?
While your Tempur-Pedic mattress will fit, we do not recommend them. A waterbed frame is recessed, and does not allow proper ventilation of the mattress.
Can I use a heating pad with my Tempur-Pedic® mattress?
We do not advise the use of heating pads on your Tempur-Pedic mattress. The same problems that occur with heated mattress pads and electric blankets are intensified with the high heat of a heating pad. If a heating pad must be used, insulate the mattress from the direct heat of the heating pad. A pillow, folded towel, folded blanket, etc. between the mattress and the heating pad will do. Feel the mattress after 30 minutes: if the mattress feels hot, it is getting too much heat and needs more insulation. If the mattress only feels warm, the mattress is being adequately insulated.
Can I use a heated mattress pad with my Tempur-Pedic® mattress?
We do not recommend using heated mattress pads. The extended application of direct heat can eventually damage the TEMPUR material, reducing its therapeutic properties. Even when not used for heating, the pad will prevent the transfer of body heat into the TEMPUR® material, reducing the therapeutic effect of the mattress.
Can I use a mattress pad with my Tempur-Pedic mattress?
We do not recommend using conventional mattress pads or mattress covers as they can affect the full pressure-relieving experience of our proprietary TEMPUR® material. The MattressProtector by Tempur-Pedic™ has been specifically designed to protect your Tempur-Pedic mattress while not impacting the feel or performance. You never have to flip or rotate the Tempur-Pedic® Swedish Mattress™.
I spilled liquid on my Tempur-Pedic mattress, what should I do?

If by chance something was to spill on your Tempur-Pedic® mattress the following steps need to be taken. Please note that these steps do not guarantee the stain or odor will be completely resolved as the mattress should never become wet.

The SymphonyBed by Tempur-Pedic™, The RhapsodyBed by Tempur-Pedic®, The BellaSonna Bed by Tempur-Pedic™, The ClassicBed by Tempur-Pedic™, The DeluxeBed by Tempur-Pedic™, and The OriginalBed by Tempur-Pedic®

  • Remove the zippered cover from your mattress.
  • Wash in cold water with mild detergent.
  • Hang dry for best results.
  • Never use bleach or bleaching products with the cover.
  • After the cover has been removed, soak up as much of the liquid using towels as possible. This may require pushing down of the material with the towel(s) to release the moisture.
  • Once excess moisture is removed you will need to let the mattress air dry. If you have a fan it can be placed so that it blows on the mattress to speed up the drying process.
  • TEMPUR® material should never become wet. If you foresee such a problem, we recommend The MattressProtector by Tempur-Pedic™ to provide extra protection against liquid spills or accidents.

The CelebrityBed by Tempur-Pedic™, The GrandBed by Tempur-Pedic™, and The PrimaBed by Tempur-Pedic™ - covers are not machine washable

  • Soak up as much liquid as possible. This may require pushing down of the material with a towel(s) to release the moisture.
How do I keep my pillow fresh?
There is a simple process to follow when cleaning Tempur-Pedic pillows. Remove the cover or pillow case and roll the pillow like a sleeping bag. Then unroll and repeat this procedure rolling in the opposite direction. This will allow the material to breathe and absorb fresh air. The covers on all Tempur-Pedic pillows can be removed and washed except The GrandPillow by Tempur-Pedic which may only be dry cleaned. Cleaning instructions for the removable covers are to remove the cover, wash in cold water with mild detergent and line dry.
Can I use my Tempur-Pedic mattress with a futon frame?
Tempur-Pedic does not offer a futon frame or furniture components. We do not recommend this type of foundation for the Tempur-Pedic® Swedish Mattress™.
Can I use a platform bed with my Tempur-Pedic mattress?
Tempur-Pedic mattresses have been designed to be paired with a Tempur-Pedic foundation. However, we understand that some consumers wish to use their existing platform style bed with slats (as opposed to a flat surface) with our mattress. The basic guideline is that as long as the slats are at least 3" wide and no more than 4" apart it can work. It should be noted that Tempur-Pedic is not liable for any damage sustained to the foundation, and reserves the right to have the consumer provide proof of the integrity of the platform base in the event of any warranty related inquiries.
Can I use a Murphy bed with my Tempur-Pedic mattress?
The Tempur-Pedic Swedish Mattress™ should work with your current wall/Murphy bed. The flat wooden frame should adequately support the mattress, providing you with the comfort you desire. However, Tempur-Pedic is not liable for any damage to the wall frame, and reserves the right to have the consumer provide proof of the integrity of the wall frame in the event of any warranty related inquiries. While you will be able to fold the bed into the wall each morning, we do not recommend doing so. We feel that the mattress is best protected by resting on a flat surface at all times.
Can I fold my Tempur-Pedic mattress?
Your Tempur-Pedic Swedish Mattress™ may be folded temporarily, with the TEMPUR® side in (the top side of the mattress), to make it easier to move. When transporting or storing your mattress, lay the mattress flat - not on its side or folded. If your mattress is delivered folded during the very cold weather (below 50 °F), do not try to force it to lay flat. It may take a few hours, depending on the temperature of the room in which it is placed, but the mattress will naturally unfold as it warms up.
Why does my new Tempur-Pedic mattress have a strange odor?
Your mattress may have a slight odor remaining from our unique manufacturing process. This is normal and completely harmless and will dissipate within a few days.
What is TEMPUR® pressure relieving material?
It is a viscoelastic, temperature sensitive material, quite different from ordinary foam. Viscoelastic describes the property of a substance to both resist flow or change of shape (viscous) and to return to its original shape after being forced to change (elastic). An imperfect version of TEMPUR material was developed for NASA in the 1970s, designed specifically to conform to any individual's body and relieve the pressure of the tremendous forces of gravity the astronauts experienced during lift off and flight. Like so many NASA technologies, the formula was eventually released to the public. In 1991, Tempur World introduced TEMPUR pressure relieving material, a vastly improved reinvention of the original NASA formula for home and medical use.
How is TEMPUR different from other materials that claim to be viscoelastic?
Unlike memory foam, TEMPUR material is extremely dense--there are simply more cells per square inch than in most viscoelastic foams. Furthermore, the cells themselves are extremely dense and consistently shaped. The greater density allows for greater sensitivity of the material, and is more durable preventing the "bottoming out" that can occur in less dense material.
How does the Tempur-pedic mattress react in Humid Climates?
In reference to humidity or high temperature, your Tempur-Pedic mattress is only sensitive in the fact it will feel softer or less firm. This will not adversely affect the life-span or durability. The pressure-relieving qualities will remain the same.
Is the Tempur-Pedic material sensitive to temperature?
TEMPUR® material is temperature sensitive, so environmental temperatures may affect the feel of your mattress. Very warm and humid weather may make the mattress feel very soft, while very cold weather may render the mattress somewhat firmer. If you feel the mattress is too firm, try removing the conventional mattress pad to increase the responsiveness of TEMPUR® material. If you feel the mattress is too soft, try adding a conventional mattress pad to make the mattress seem firmer. You may also try keeping the room slightly cooler.
How long will it take for me to get used to the Tempur-Pedic mattress?
Some people are completely comfortable on the mattress right away. Others who have been sleeping on a hard surface, may need some time to adjust to the remarkable amount of support and unique pressure relieving feel of the mattress (some call it a "floating" or "light" feeling).
Will the Tempur-Pedic mattress make me hot?
No. The cells themselves are open and breathable, so the material is self-ventilating. Unlike innerspring mattresses which cause pressure points, the TEMPUR® material relieves pressure resulting in better circulation. Due to the increase in circulation throughout your body, you may discover you need fewer blankets to sleep comfortably.
Is it more difficult to change position?
No, the slow recovery of the mattress to its original shape after conforming to your exact body contours is a different feeling. This is necessary for the mattress to conform to your body to relieve pressure and reduce the need to change position (toss and turn).
My Tempur-Pedic mattress feels softer than when I first bought it. Is it breaking down?
The mattress naturally undergoes an adjustment or "softening" period. Some cells may have remained closed after the manufacturing process. The mattress cells are fully opening and becoming more responsive to temperature and weight with continued use. This is normal and desirable. The softening process may occur more rapidly in the areas where you most frequently sleep as those cells are being manipulated more regularly.
Why does my mattress feel very firm and cold sometimes, and soft and responsive others?
TEMPUR material is temperature sensitive, so environmental temperatures can affect the feel of the mattress; but it will still adjust to your body temperature. The unique properties of our material are designed to work to each individual size, shape, and weight.
Is there an adjustment period with the Tempur-Pedic mattress?
Like any new bed, it may take a while to become accustomed to the unique feeling of your new Tempur-Pedic® Swedish Mattress™. Most people are very comfortable on the first night. Others, however, may need a few nights to adjust to the unique feeling of TEMPUR® material.
My mattress is sagging/has a body indention, what do I do?
A poor foundation may cause the appearance of an indentation. A box spring will likely cause your Tempur-Pedic® mattress to sag. If your mattress is supported by a Tempur-Pedic® Platform Foundation and is still sagging, your Platform Foundation may be damaged. To determine if the defect is in the mattress or in the support, you can place your mattress on the floor. Your mattress should return to proper flatness and support when placed on the floor if the Platform Foundation is at fault.
Can I use my existing 4 poster/sleigh bed/etc with my TEMPUR® Advanced Ergo System™?
The adjustable base is designed to fit into most modern beds. However, we have had some difficulty fitting them into antique beds. We always recommend the customer measure the inside dimensions of the bed before purchasing an adjustable base.
